چکیده

We have established the solid-fluid coexistence region for a system of polydisperse hard spheres with near Gaussian diameter distributions, as a function of polydispersity. Our approach employs Monte Carlo simulation in the isobaric semigrand ensemble with a Gaussian activity distribution. Gibbs-Duhem integration is used to trace the coexistence pressure as a function of the variance of the imposed activity distribution. Significantly, we observe a ‘‘terminal’’ polydispersity above which there can be no fluid-solid coexistence. The terminus arises quite naturally as the Gibbs-Duhem integration path leads the pressure to infinity. This pressure divergence is an artifact of the method used to evaluate the freezing transition, because the sphere diameters vanish in this limit. A simple rescaling of the pressure with the average diameter brings the terminal pressure to a finite value. Nevertheless, the existence of this terminus only at infinite pressure precludes the construction of a continuous path from the solid to the fluid. At the terminus the polydispersity is 5.7% for the solid and 11.8% for the fluid while the volume fractions are 0.588 and 0.547 for the solid and fluid, respectively. Substantial fractionation observed at high values of the polydispersity (.5%) implies that the ‘‘constrained eutectic’’ assumption made in previous theoretical studies is not generally valid. Our results for the terminal polydispersity are consistent with experiments performed on polydisperse colloidal suspensions. @S1063-651X~96!05007-6#

Freezing of polydisperse hard spheres

Freezing of polydisperse hard spheres is studied by Monte Carlo simulation and the results are interpreted with a cell model of the solid. The results supplement an earlier study of freezing of nearly monodisperse hard spheres and, within the assumption of a substitutionally disordered solid, a complete description of the freezing behavior is obtained. The density and polydispersity of the prec...

Optimal packing of polydisperse hard-sphere fluids II

We consider the consequences of keeping the total surface fixed for a polydisperse system of N hard spheres. In contrast with a similar model (J. Zhang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 110, 5318 (1999)), the Percus-Yevick and Mansoori equations of state work very well and do not show a breakdown . For high pressures Monte Carlo simulation we show three mechanically stable polydisperse crystals with eithe...

Fractionated crystallization in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres

We consider the nature of the fluid–solid phase transition in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres. For a sufficiently polydisperse mixture (s.0.085) crystallization occurs with simultaneous fractionation. At the fluid–solid boundary, a broad fluid diameter distribution is split into a number of narrower fractions, each of which then crystallize. The number of crystalline phases increases wit...

The melting of a polydisperse hard disk system is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the semigrand canonical ensemble. This is done in the context of possible continuous melting by a dislocation unbinding mechanism, as an extension of the 2D hard disk melting problem. We find that while there is pronounced fractionation in polydispersity, the apparent density-polydispersity gap does not...

A modified fundamental measure theory for spherical particles in microchannels

Canonical-ensemble Monte Carlo simulation and an improved fundamental-measure theory are applied to calculating the structures and chemical potentials of neutral and associating spherical particles confined in rectangular or corrugated microchannels. It is found that the confinement significantly affects the distributions of neutral spheres in the microchannels, especially at high densities or ...
